"From the very beginning, barbecue in North Carolina meant pork. During the 1500s, the Spanish introduced pigs to the southeastern part of America. Whereas cattle tended to fare poorly in the region, swine flourished, nowhere more so than in North Carolina." -Bob Garner, Guide to North Carolina Barbecue
Today (Sunday) was our one year wedding anniversary, and I think David and I agree that it's probably been the most fun weekend of our marriage (and we've had a lot of fun times together, so that's saying something!). We just did so many neat things! We primarily celebrated yesterday (Saturday)...celebrations are always better when you know you don't have to go to work the next day!
We started the fun weekend Saturday morning by going to the Lexington BBQ Festival. David had never been, and I knew he would love it! So we headed out early and got to the festival before the crowd was totally overwhelming. David got a BBQ sandwich, I got some pigtail fries, and then we finished up with a funnel cake (BBQ, fries, and a funnel cake..."the breakfast of champions" haha). We know it wasn't good for us, but we decided since it was our anniversary weekend it would be okay...
We also got to explore the exhibits, see the sand sculpture, watch a BMX stunt show, and look at some classic cars and trucks...
This was a wonderful way to start our anniversary weekend!!! Read on to our next post (Part 2) to see what we did after the festival...
